Museum of Fine Arts, Houston presents 'Through the Lens of African American Women,' Feb 3-5, featuring four films, including"Alma's Rainbow."Black women are underrepresented in Hollywood, and there is still little evidence that the industry is changing much.
The only Black woman to win the Oscar for best actress is Halle Berry, and no Black woman has been nominated for directing a film. Only one film directed by a Black woman — Ava DuVernay’s “Selma” — has been nominated for best picture.Troy lived in a Third Ward park. His death is a reminder that some of us live, die in shadows
Still, there are many cinematic projects by Black women that deserve to celebrated, said Autumn Johnson, a recent University of Houston graduate who has curated the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston's Black History Month film series,"Through the Lens of African-American Women," Friday through Sunday. The films will be shown at MFAH's Nancy and Rich Kinder Building in the Lynn Wyatt Theater.
Johnson, who also worked as a museum intern, sorted through more than a dozen films to find four that not only had Black women directors but also made a significant impact in its storytelling, she said. "I started out by just wanting to see what films by African American women were out there. There was a boom in the 1990s with films by Black women, but we know there are so many stories to be told."At 7 p.m. Friday,"Alma's Rainbow" , directed by Ayoka Chenzira, explores the life of teenager who is trying to navigate beauty standards, self-image and sexuality. At 3 p.m.
