Black and Hispanic dialysis patients experience infections more often than white patients

The CDC says infections are a leading cause of death in dialysis patients.Updated Feb. 6, 2023 1:59 pm ET

Black and Hispanic patients on dialysis experience dangerous bloodstream infections at higher rates than white patients, federal health officials said, urging healthcare providers to work to reduce disparities in infection risks. U.S. adults undergoing dialysis treatment for end-stage kidney disease were 100 times more likely to have Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream infections than people not on dialysis, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Monday in an analysis of data from 2017 to 2020. Staph infections are caused by a common bacterium found in people’s noses and on their skin and can result in severe disease or death.
