The $4.5 billion question: Friends of the NYC tech couple accused of a historic crypto-laundering scheme are questioning what they knew about the pair

When Heather Morgan got into rapping a few years ago, her surrealist rhymes were so jarring that some friends couldn't figured out if she was being serious or putting on an act.

In the day since the US Department of Justice arrested Lichtenstein and Morganin connection with laundering thousands of stolen bitcoin, the once little-known quirky New York couple have become an object of public fascination. Media reports displaying evidence of their online activities, including Morgan'sand her viral marketing tips, have added a bizarre comedic-twist to the storyline.

A dual citizen of Russia and the U.S. who goes by both his legal name Ilya and the name"Dutch," Lichteinstein studied at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and was a cofounder of sales firm MixRank that raised capital from"I didn't know him at all," investor Cuban said in an email about Lichtenstein."I'm just as curious as everyone else how he found his way into that bitfinex mess.

Lichtenstein and Morgan were not frugal, friends said, but neither were they ostentatious in their spending. A friend said they believed they were worth a couple of million dollars, and would go out for $150 sushi meals when he was in town. They rented an apartment in New York. They used credit card points to travel and gamed frequent-flier miles. They don't own cars."They live like normal rich tech people," he said.

But in 2016, Lichtenstein"bizarrely went completely MIA," Bordes said. He stopped sending investor updates, and didn't return any emails. Bordes found out later on from Lichtenstein's cofounder that he had left the company altogether. It was around the mid-2010s that Lichtenstein and Morgan met at a party in San Francisco's tech scene, according to a friend.
