Bill Gates. Photo: Jeff Pachoud/AFP via Getty Images Every year, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation releases a Goalkeepers report, tracking the world’s progress toward the U.N.’s Sustainable Development Goals. The news is almost always pretty good. This year’s edition is … not like that. “Almost every time we have opened our mouths or put pen to paper,” the Gateses write in the report’s introduction, “we have celebrated decades of historic progress in fighting poverty and disease.
It’s a super-good question. As you say, the gradual progress in literacy and reducing malnutrition, reducing childhood death, extending life spans — that largely goes unnoticed, and it’s the most amazing story there is. This year, it’s just bad news.In the very best case, two years from now, you would be, for some of the health things in particular, ideally back at where you were at the beginning of 2020.
I saw one analysis suggesting the disease was 10,000 times more deadly for a 90-year-old than a 9-year-old. So — how did this happen? In the U.S., we’ve been so focused on the failures in the White House and the inability to put together a national strategy. And obviously that has been a failure. But we’ve also had failures at the FDA, particularly in its supervision of testing, and the CDC, particularly in its muddled guidance on things like mask-wearing. And while the U.S.
South Korea is an amazing story of contact tracing. They thought, “Hey, who has PCR machines?” And they got testing to be free and quick, and they never had long turnarounds on tests. That’s a unique U.S. stupidity, that we let the commercial guys get so rich on these tests that they take backlogs. There was no benefit to paying anybody for a test that takes more than 24 hours.
I haven’t looked at Cambodia. I haven’t looked at Myanmar. Certainly South Asia is really bad. The India epidemic is a horrific epidemic. They just became No. 2. They passed Brazil in terms of number of cases, and they test less per capita. So it’s —About Asia broadly, there is this theory that cross-protection in that part of the world is higher because there’s more bats in that part of the world and so more coronaviruses have escaped and people there will have more cross-protection.
You were talking about being ready for the next pandemic. I’m curious how you think about the next phase of this one. The University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, which you’re involved with, put out this much-talked-about projection a few days ago suggesting that 400,000 Americans could die by the end of the year.
BillGates sidibongo
ValaAfshar BillGates Ah ah...
BillGates Hi Bill! Don't let this stretch past 2022 🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕
BillGates ...when all pull together...much sooner!!!
BillGates Gates also bragged on national TV that he has invested in vaccines because he gets a 20 to one return on investment. He's in it for the money. I don't trust him further than I could throw him and his wife.
BillGates Who gives two flying f*%s what Bill Gates thinks? Like seriously. He’s a computer nerd billionaire, not an expert. Listen to the experts.
briandavidearp BillGates Listening to Laurie Garrett, vaccinating the population before 2024 seems unlikely.
BillGates Contact: Rikers Island 9865$86
BillGates He has been wrong on EVERYTHING.
BillGates POTUS44 inherited the Iraq war. And now JoeBiden will inherit the coronavirus pandemic. Way to go GOP!
BillGates When did Bill Gates become a medical doctor?
BillGates Sounds like it‘s going to stretch well past 2022
BillGates Why is Gates even talking, You probably have the best doctors telling you what’s up, let them talk. Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation 46.8 billion in assets, what did you do to stop COVID 19, all this research, it’s just a bank to hold your money. Your a crook, you’ve always been.
BillGates I disagree with the concept that we could get America invested in mandatory ongoing surveillance-level testing since the bulk of the country did shelter in place for a few months. That was before trump handed out Kool-aid linking 'doubting science' to 'individual freedoms!'
BillGates this guy n the 'deep state' r obviously grasping for straws at this point* this was the same man that said we need a vaccine asap along with every other dem* no trump says we have a vaccine for october to roll out to fix everything* then THiS is what bill gates says* stop+ THINK*
ByTimGraham BillGates Really buried the lead. Last sentence is rich countries will end it in 2021 We are still one of those countries, for now.
ByTimGraham BillGates Bill Gates is an absolute idiot and so is anybody who listens to him!
BillGates I will never take a vaccine made by Bill gates company’s or anyone who works for him.
maggieNYT BillGates It's a start Bill, the best we can hope for now.
maggieNYT BillGates BILL GATES IS NOT A DOCTOR
maggieNYT BillGates realDonaldTrump FYI
zreally450 BillGates How are we going to change people refusing to wear masks and socially distance? That behavior has prolonged this pandemic. They see it as their rally cry 🤦♀️
maggieNYT BillGates And one vaccine may not work on everyone, which is why WHO wants to work on as many vaccines as possible because different vaccines may work on different people. (and why full length clinical trials are required, not the Trump truncated ones).
maggieNYT BillGates hope so
maggieNYT BillGates
maggieNYT BillGates Oh another billionaire globalist shares his opinion. Hard pass.
maggieNYT BillGates Why do people keep asking Bill Gates about viruses? When did he become an expert on such things?
maggieNYT BillGates We will find that BillGates is right. It *will* stretch into 2022. Bank on it.
maggieNYT BillGates Makes sense. Vaccine won’t be ready until mid next year and then to vaccinate a few billion people takes time.
mikiebarb BillGates I f’ing dare a science-denying Trump supporter to say, “Well what does he know-he’s not a doctor”...
jdpaustin BillGates
maggieNYT BillGates This is all BS. Open up completely now. If the 20% premium went away this would end tomorrow.
maggieNYT BillGates Experts have been saying this since February.
maggieNYT BillGates Is he a dr now?
maggieNYT BillGates Well, the magazine posted this 20 minutes ago and you replied 3 minutes later. At least you did your research.
maggieNYT BillGates BeatCOVID19 Once epicenters of COVID-19 South Korea, China, Italy, and NYC - all came out of it with same formula: - lockdown🔒 - distancing↔️ - masks😷 - testing🔬 - tracing (TBD)📐 Copy it. Implement it. Control data and messaging. Full stop. * Everything else is noise *
mikiebarb BillGates Genuine, non-politically-movitated* question. Is eradication the ask before society can return to some semblance of normalcy? *not actually possible but really i want to know
SpiroAgnewGhost BillGates Holy shit.
maggieNYT BillGates Bill Gates does not have a degree in anything. Why would we believe him?
BillGates Flu vaccine has been mass produced since 1945 and between 25,000-60,000+ US citizens die each year from it. No masks, no businesses shut down, no media paranoia....The deaths are terrible, but the media and political tool this has become is killing many more lives!
BillGates Devious, Anti-American globalist.
BillGates Not a Doctor Bill !! Sorry, rich but not smart! Thanks
BillGates Not buying this for a second
BillGates World’s most devious globalist.
BillGatesBioTerrorist Propaganda he is the vaccine salesman in chief. Say no to Medicaltyranny Nomandatoryvaccines
Please don't call him a philanthropist.
Nonsense
Brilliant humans makes brilliant mistakes: which will stimulate social unrest. Is that what he wants? Getting his profits illegally?
Can Trump win the elections already? We are tired of Bill and the pandemic.
kuku27 Unfortunately pandemic, by accident or design has come at a time, whose family/roots are unknown, making vaccine , treatment difficult. Additionally more are in pipeline, what can or will happen even god can't tell. Be prepared for worst that could happen to this planet.
F that guy. No vax
Bill Gates put 5G in my spreadsheet.
