Big Tech’s best bet is to friend U.S. regulators GinaChon jennifersaba

Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren said on March 8 that she would work to break up Amazon.com, Facebook and Alphabet unit Google if she were elected U.S. president. She proposed passing legislation that would designate companies with an annual global revenue of at least $25 billion and that offer an online marketplace, exchange or way to connect to third parties, as “platform utilities.”

They would be prohibited from owning any participants on that platform, or sharing data with third parties. Her plan would mean the Amazon Marketplace would be separated from Amazon Basics, which offers Amazon-branded household items like batteries and kitchen supplies. Google’s advertising business and search engine would also be split apart.

Warren also said she would appoint regulators committed to using existing tools to unwind “anti-competitive mergers.” She mentioned Amazon’s purchase of Whole Foods Market, Facebook’s acquisitions of WhatsApp and Instagram, and Google’s takeovers of Nest and DoubleClick as examples.
