Walsh, the former mayor of Boston, will be the first Cabinet official to depart the Biden administration.The Daily Faceoff reported Tuesday that Walsh will soon be installed as the executive director of the National Hockey League Players' Association after a 10-month candidate search. Walsh had been rumored to be a top candidate for the post in recent weeks, and his hiring is in the process of being approved by all 32 members of the executive board.
During Biden's first two years in office, Walsh served as a key administration mediator on several labor and supply chain-focused agreements, including one with the Port of Los Angeles in 2021 and one with railroad workers in the latter half of 2022. The Biden administration ushered significant labor growth with Walsh atop the department. The economy added 12 million new jobs during Biden's first two years in office, and the unemployment rate registered at 3.4% in January 2023, the lowest mark since 1969.
Walsh joins a growing list of top Biden aides to announce their departures, including outgoing chief of staff Ron Klain and National Economic Council Director Brian Deese.Former COVID-19 czar Jeff Zients will take over for Klain after the State of the Union, but the White House has not yet announced a replacement for Deese, who is expected to remain in his role through the end of February.
