Biden Floats New Infrastructure Spending Offer of $1 Trillion

WASHINGTON—President Biden told a top Senate Republican that he wants $1 trillion in new spending in infrastructure legislation, according to people briefed on the matter, a proposal that still leaves the White House far apart from GOP lawmakers ahead of a deadline to show progress in the talks.with Sen. Shelley Moore Capito , Mr. Biden laid out his $1 trillion proposal and signaled he remained committed to paying for the plan with corporate tax increases, the people said.

Senate Republicans have rejected any new taxes to pay for the infrastructure spending, with some suggesting user fees or unspent Covid-19 relief funds instead. Also, the spending gulf between the GOP and the White House is wider than it appears in the top-line numbers, as the Republicans’ counter offers have included current projected spending, while the White House’s proposals are in addition to current projected spending.

What you mean to say is that once again, Republicans are obstructing Biden's agenda, even though his proposals are supported by a clear majority of Americans. Obstruction seems like a losing strategy, but they've been sticking with it during Democratic presidencies for years.

Not a psychic but President Biden is being played by Republicans. They have negotiated him down and then will shut the door on his face and deny him the votes.

I think Biden and his team would be better served using the phrase, '$1 trillion over 8-10 years.' He would still be able to convey the 'bigness' of the plan but remove some of the sticker shock some have thought this is a one-time expenditure.
