“Should we have done more testing earlier? Yes,” Biden said. “But we’re doing more now.”

But the president said he “didn’t over promise.” Despite recent outbreaks that have led to mostly temporary school closures around the country due to staffing shortages from COVID infections, “95% of schools in America are open.”

And he defended his director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, who’s been criticized for muddled and shifting messaging on the virus. “To the extent it’s confusing it’s because the scientists are learning more,” Biden said. “She came along and said, ‘Look I’m a scientist and I’m learning, learning how to deal with stating the case for what we’ve learned.’ ”“We’re moving toward a time when COVID-19 won’t disrupt our daily lives, when COVID-19 won’t be a crisis but something to protect against and a threat,” Biden said. “Look, we’re not there yet, but we will get there.

Biden says nation weary from COVID, but US in a better placeWASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden acknowledged Wednesday that the pandemic has left Americans exhausted and demoralized but insisted at a news conference marking his first year in office that he has “outperformed” expectations. Have we reached pre-pandemic job levels yet? Has he “created” any jobs as President yet or no? “You will play because there’s nothing for you to do on weekends.” It’s not true! I can put new words and Kanjis into my Anki, read, solve my lists of school problems… I’ll sign Netflix again to practice listening, learn German. It all sounds funny and enjoyable to me.
