Biden is backing a major effort to reform the military’s handling of sexual assault after consulting with Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin about an unprecedented plan to remove decisions on prosecuting cases from unit commanders

"Sexual assault is an abuse of power and an affront to our shared humanity," the president said in a statement.

Austin's recommendation does not, however, go as far as legislation gaining support in Congress that would make that change for all major crimes, not just sexual assault. In a Friday memo, Austin directed senior Pentagon leaders to begin carrying out the panel’s recommendations. This includes working with Congress to amend the Uniform Code of Military Justice to remove commanders from decisions to prosecute sexual assaults and related crimes — domestic violence, child abuse and retaliation — and adding sexual harassment as an offense under the UCMJ.

Austin will continue to review the “full scope” of the panel’s recommendations in the area of prevention, unit climate and victim services, he wrote in the memo, but “generally they appear strong and well-grounded.” Austin previewed the announcement last week, when he said in a statement that he was backing the changes. Austin pledged to work with Congress to implement the reforms but did not take a position on legislation that would go further than the panel’s recommendation and require that independent lawyers handle not just sexual assault, but all major crimes.

Biden grows visibly frustrated with questions on Afghanistan: 'I want to talk about happy things'President Joe Biden grew visibly irritated Friday when questioned about the state of Afghanistan, where a formal withdrawal is nearly complete, and a major US air base was officially handed over even as US generals warn of a looming civil war. The woman and girls they will be killed murdered in horrific ways so sad Wait till the Taliban actually takes over. The spin should be epic. They have been fighting there for a thousand years. Nobody is going to change that. Many tried, many failed. War is going on in many places because men are fools. No one can stop it.

U.S. job gains surge, easing pressure on Biden over labor marketThe U.S. economy added 850,000 jobs in June, a strong showing after two disappointing months of employment growth that had sparked criticism from Republicans that the Biden administration was stifling a labor market revival Reality doesn’t matter. Low job growth numbers are a cue to trigger the “we’re in a depression” panic button; robust job growth as in this month’s report triggers the “inflation, the US is Brazil” panic button.
