Biden administration shuts down Ambler Road mine plans

The non-public road would be intended to facilitate mineral development that would run from the Dalton Highway to the Ambler Mining District, which supports mining for gold, copper, cobalt, zinc, and silver.on 28 million acres of federal land across the state, suggesting that those lands be protected from resource development due to the expected harm it would do to subsistence fishing and hunting that Alaskan villages rely on.

Rep. Mary Peltola wrote in April that the decision is a “huge step back for Alaska, failing to strike a balance between the need for gap oil and natural gas and legitimate environmental concerns, and steamrolling the voices of many Alaska Natives in the decision-making process.”The United Tribes of Bristol Bay stated in a release from Executive Director Alannah Hurley that that “majority” of federally-recognized tribes in Alaska support the decision to protect their lands.
