After that I learned to trust the process. There have been a number of times where I have been working and I decided to change the look right before Chloe and Halle walked out the door. I would put them in a new look or cut a pair of pants into a pair of shorts and boots. By just trusting the process and that organic way of working you're creating things. You have no idea if it’s going to be iconic or just something that everybody loves.
That was my introduction to costume design, which is something I really want to do. I was kind of starting out as a baby, but I won an Emmy. That’s something that I think I always wanted and believed I should do. In a weird way in the back of my mind, I always thought that it was possible, but did I really believe that it was possible? I don’t quite know. But here we are, and it’s really quite cool. I still haven’t quite processed the magnitude of it all.
What I realized about these industries is that the most successful people may not have been the most talented, they were the people that were genuinely themselves. People just want to be around them, you know? As a young Black woman, it was more about my being authentic.As an intern, I remember wanting to—or thinking that I needed to—talk a certain way and be a certain way because I was atmagazine. I was the only Black girl trying to be something.
I’ve been able to practically help people launch their careers. People have been creating things for so long, so whether it’s through Black Owned Everything or through celebrity dressing, I’ve been able to bring my people with me. I want my people to know “I’m with you.”
