This is a dish that we want to curl up with on a brisk fall day.

I got Betty Wason's wonderful Everything Cookbook for a wedding present. I have made this many times but I also add this step for fabulous gravy: After the meat is done, remove it from the gravy and puree the gravy in a blender or food processor. Put the gravy and the meat back in the pot and reheat. Serve with wide noodles , and steamed green beans or broccoli.I made this a couple of months ago, when the temperatures were a tad chilly, and it was fantastic. Really.

I made in my Instant Pot pressure cooker. Mostly followed the recipe but after browning meat and softening the veggies a bit, I put everything in on the stew/meat setting for 75 minutes. Came out perfectly. I skipped adding potatoes to serve over egg noodles.The family loves this recipe. I used half red wine/stock for the liquid and threw in some fresh sage, rosemary and thyme. I put all the veggies in at the beginning and it was perfect.This was fantastic and simple.

Heavenly Oatmeal-Molasses Rolls Recipe on Food52I wasn’t a bread maker before I joined Food52. I caught the bug after trying AntoniaJames’ Buttermilk Oatmeal bread. I’ve explored many different types of breads and rolls since then. This one is an adaptation of a recipe for oatmeal bread from the James Beard Foundation website, which I checked out after Stephanie Bourgeois’ cook spotlight. When I tried it, the subtle depth of flavor from the molasses really surprised me. Even if you aren’t an experienced bread maker, don’t fear. The steps are straightforward and the dough is a dream to handle (no kneading). It is also very flexible because the 1st rise in refrigerator can go as little as two hours to overnight. One of the changes I made is to really up the butter because I love buttery rolls! Rolling up each roll helps give a nice and shred-y texture when you pull the rolls apart. And don’t pass on brushing the baked rolls with butter after they come out of the oven. The smell of the hot rolls and butter is heavenly, hence the name. - monkeymom These rolls are really, really good! A family favorite, too.

Chocolate Chip Cookies Recipe on Food52Year round, my freezer is a treasure trove of sweet treats. Often, when friends come over, they walk right past me, head into the kitchen, and start foraging around until ahhhh yes they find what they’re looking for: chocolate chip cookies. They take a huge bite and sigh out a thing or two from this list: They’re intoxicating. Can I live at your house? In your freezer? With those cookies? They’re perfect. They need ice cream. They’re so you. They make me happy. OMFG. They are the reason I come over to your house. I’ll trade you some for a bottle of gin. Can I have another? (Full disclosure: There are a few dissenters who think my cookies are too big, overly packed with chocolate chips, and that I should be drawn and quartered for using nuts.) As a child, I would watch my mom cream the butter, pack down the brown sugar, meditatively scrape the dough off the sides of the mixing bowl. She would meticulously portion out the first two trays of cookies, slide them into the oven, and then dive in for her first taste of dough. All manner of composure would drop away as she fell into an altered state of cookie-dough-eating bliss. All I wanted was to have what she was having. To make what she was making. So she taught me to sift the flour, carefully pour the vanilla extract (never over the mixing bowl!), and follow the directions (with a few of her special tweaks) on the back of the Toll House bag. And now, 40 or so years down the road, a thousand cookie batches later, I have my own recipe, one that has shifted and aged, along with me, and I like to think it has settled into some sort of a lovely middle-aged kickassedness. In case you’re a Toll House Cookie junkie, let me talk you through how I stray from the classic. Some of my changes are very straightforward: a touch less flour, more brown sugar, less white sugar, extra vanilla, and more nuts (finely chopped). And I really crank up the amount, size, and intensity of the chocolate chips by using a combination of both bi We did today! Dough is in the freezer! Would love some of these right now 😍 Excellent tip. But first you have to assemble all the ingredients. If you are like me, once you start, you bake them all. Then you remember you were supposed to put 1/2 in the freezer.
