My main opinion in the Belmont Stakes is more of a “pick against” than a “pick for,” as there looks to be enough to take a stand against #9at a short price. He was in the right spot physically and from a trip perspective in the Preakness, and he got needed fitness coming out of the Kentucky Derby. He ran his career best
in the Preakness, and he’ll need similar here. From a form, trip, and distance standpoint, that set-up looks questionable in this race and makes him potentially vulnerable.INTREPID HEART . This late starter—he didn’t run his first race until February of this year—did not participate on the Derby Trail. After breaking his maiden on début, he came back to win his first start against winners in a gritty performance at Keeneland Racecourse in Lexington, Kentucky. Given the physical exertion of that race, he possibly regressed some out of that race, and that, along with stumbling at the break, was a factor in the Grade 3 Peter Pan over the Belmont track a month ago .
There have been four Preakness winners since 2000 that have gone on to win the Belmont. Two were Triple Crown winners and two arguably should have been . WillI interviewed trainer Mark Casse two weeks ago, and when I asked about the mile and a half distance for War of Will, he interjected that he knew his other horse,, would definitely appreciate the distance. That, and his good second-place finish in the G3 Peter Pan over this track, are enough for me to include him.
