CFDA honoree, trailblazer, and multi-hyphenate Bethann Hardison on her undeniable legacy in fashion

Now that I’m writing my book, I realized I was successful by the time I was 12 years old. I was independent, and that allowed me to achieve and do so much. I was always a leader, and I believe leadership is so valuable in anything. Leadership is all about how people respond to you.

I don’t think I could have imagined any of these things happening because I do it organically, and it’s never been a plan. I’ve never been ambitious. People think that’s completely ludicrous when I say that, but I’ve never been ambitious. They think it’s impossible because they believe, if you have success in something, you have to be ambitious.

I just thought, “thank God for that warning.” I had to be really strong. It’s not easy to go and do something that no one else has ever done before. And that was the key. There were other agencies, but none of them accomplished what I was able to. It was an agency with Black and Latino agents running it and leading with a white kid on the runway. Because the only way I was going to be able to beat them was to compete with the same product.

You have to be able to beat someone at their own game. I never wanted an all-Black modeling agency because it didn’t make any sense to me. As an agency, you have to diversify, otherwise we’d be sitting there waiting, and the business doesn’t allow for that. There were so many people who helped me. That’s precious to me. I’ve had a good life, and I’m still constantly learning. If nothing else, I am compassionate, and I demand a great deal of respect. And I think what I would like is to be remembered as more than just me, because my work has been exactly that.

Hey Vogue, if I make false domestic allegations against Raven__Smith will you believe me? I'm a woman and your sexist tone deaf writer thinks you should just believe me. Can I file a report and get Mr Smith blacklisted in the industry too?

It’s time to talk about Vogue’s article (linked). Saying women should “believe women - all women” is the same as saying men should believe all men. Since when do we blindly believe an entire gender population without considering the facts? DeppVsHeard

Usually I don't feel the need for this but the fact that vogue has enabled the ridicule of an abuse victim is absolutely disgusting. Fire Raven Smith and put out a public apology vogue. boycottvogue JusticeForJohnnyDepp

Seriously shameless. Trying to protect amber..? who destroys Jhonny's life. Seriously reconsider. Otherwise your shitty magazine will be burn

So you’re still using Johnny Depp as clickbait for likes after releasing that dog shit article from Raven Smith? 🤣

shame BoycottVogue Just to believe that we have to believe the sun and amber heard is stupid but really believe amberheardlies makes vogue more stupid RespecttherealvictimsofDV
