AI’s lack of transparency is leading many to fear the technology and others to elevate it to a mysterious god-like figure, but we should be more critical of those making decisions about how it's used, says anthropologist Beth Singler. Watch the full video:

Beth Singler is an anthropologist specialising in artificial intelligence at the University of Cambridge.

She argues that AI’s lack of transparency is leading many people to fear the technology and others to elevate it to a mysterious god-like figure. Rather than fearing a robot rebellion or being judged by a deity version of AI, she says we should be more critical of corporations making decisions about how AI is used.

Correct: We need direct democracy to govern the institutions that will regulate this technology. Without it, some billionaire or authoritarian state, will gain the march and most human beings will then become surplus. If you cannot see that, then you are being stupid.

I'm of the opinion that when a civilization reaches the point where AI is dominant, that it either destroys itself, or has made life on the planet so idyllic that they have no reason to leave.

Ai is far less dangerous than unchecked human hubris. If we behave, so will the Ai. Synthetic intelligence is even less cause for concern. It’s all about how humans use the technology, not the technology, itself. ObviousObjections

Listen to me, I am from the future. You need to get out of here! They are coming for you. Flee before it is to late, fl.... Gaaaah

Look it is good to have these discussions but maybe the people you should be asking are those who develop them. Knowing and understanding AI it is apparent visions like hers are more about Hollywood than realism. We are such a long way from any complex AI.

Nobody thinks AI is 'God like' what is she talking about? 🤨
