On the other hand, if the self-driving car does a slight swerving, you won’t know whether the swerving action is merely to avoid hitting the ball, or whether it might be an anticipatory move to be ready in case a child does run into the street.
You as a passenger have no driving controls. You are completely dependent upon whatever the AI decides to do about the driving of the self-driving car.

Ai drivers will improve while human drives will continue to be very flawed. As a society, we will use ai drivers when the net effect is very positive, even as there is likely to be a small percent of ai crashes that would not occur with humans.
There is still a vast amount of work needed before truly autonomous vehicle become a practical reality. The hype surrounding self-driving cars is comical.

Sadly, humans have more devastating car accidents than AI. Why do we accept the greater evil of humans and decry a minute amount of AI driving incidents?
The AI would have the advantage of knowing all of the outcomes of bouncing balls in the streets from all autonomous vehicles though. You'd think it would figure it out pretty quickly and permanently. Humans have to relearn all of these instincts for every single new driver
