More than half a century before Bernard Arnault became the world’s richest person, he finished his studies in civil engineering and mathematics at French university Ecole Polytechnique in 1971 and began working as an engineer at the construction firm founded by his grandfather in the northern French city of Roubaix. By 1979, he rose to become chairman of the company.
