France will honour Samuel Paty, a teacher who was murdered and beheaded last Friday in a suspected terror attack, with the Legion d’Honneur, the nation’s highest honor, France’s education minister declared on Tuesday.... [+]Paty, 47, was killed last Friday and beheaded in the Paris suburb of Conflans-Sainte-Honorine as he walked home from school.

His brutal murder took place after he was targeted by an attacker that prosecutors say sought to punish him for showing cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad, considered blasphemous, to pupils during a civics class teaching freedom of expression earlier this month.broadcaster BFMTV that Paty will be posthumously awarded the Legion d’Honneur, reserved for French military or civilians who serve the nation in a notable way.

Paty will also be made a Commander of Academic Palms, an honour that recognises outstanding contributions made by teachers and academics, to their institutions.Paty’s murder is the latest Islamist terror attack to have rocked France in recent years, and has highlighted dissent from religious fringe groups towards France's stance as a secular state.
