Activists say George Floyd’s death after a white police officer pressed his knee into Floyd’s neck has exposed simmering frustration. They say there’s still much work to do to improve the relationship between the black community and law enforcement.

Law enforcement officers amassed along Lake Street near Hiawatha Ave. as fires burned after a night of unrest and protests in the death of George Floyd early Friday, May 29, 2020 in Minneapolis. Floyd died after being restrained by Minneapolis police officers on Memorial Day.

Minneapolis — a city of nearly 430,000 that is 60% white, 19% black and 9% Hispanic — has a long history of economic and educational disparities that have marginalized black residents for decades, despite its reputation for progressive values. It is one of the most segregated cities in the country for its size, and schools suffer from stubborn achievement gaps.

While Nekima Levy Armstrong, a civil rights lawyer and former president of the Minneapolis NAACP, acknowledges that progress, she said that many old habits are still entrenched. The eruption of anger in Minneapolis reflects frustration over these realities, despite some progress, said Teqen Zéa-Aida, a longtime activist in the city.

Bystander video and photos of the arrest showed Floyd on the ground, while Officer Derek Chauvin kneels on his neck, ignoring his pleas for help. Two other officers appear to help hold him down, and a fourth attempts to keep space around the scene. In addition to igniting the turmoil in Minneapolis, Floyd’s death has garnered national attention, and it drew comparisons to the case of Eric Garner, a black man who died in 2014 in New York after he was placed in a chokehold by police and also said he could not breathe.

Democrat politicians who pander to police unions for political donations & votes are to blame for this event. They could have prevented it all. Democrats always protect bad apples for cash in their election pockets.

And the result of the riots, looting, burning, violence has once again set back any progress made just like it did during the Obama years. MLK knew this approach wasn’t the path to justice and peace but present day activists are too filled with hate fueled by the the left & MSM.

The simmering frustration has come from Dem Govenors refusing to open up their states. This act has given a way for activists to direct the pent up anger to destroy their own communities.

its not just the relationship between blacks the the police, most people no longer trust the police, I'm white and I don't trust them at all. Are they all bad, no, but I don't know which i'll get next time i'm pulled over.

It took seven minutes to murder that man in slow motion, on camera, for no reason whatsoever. The casualness of it and the lack of repercussions (a single 3rd degree murder charge but only after rioting) underscores how millions of Americans are simply not free.

Don’t break laws. Literally THAT simple.

Just call it what it is: murder.

Why did Floyd resist arrest and get out of the car? Could you be a police officer and put up with verbally abusive people who resist arrest? answerhonestly

They need to start with hiring and firing. Hiring is on the Chief. He needs the power of firing. Unions are good. Those who abuse their power against citizens, suspect or not should not be protected by the Unions.

Still much work to do to improve relations? This shit has been on my whole lifetime and I just turned 69. Never gonna happen.....

👀👇

Stop killing them would be a good start.

I hope that NOW America can see why Collin Kaepernick did what he did....

Sharp reporting there ap

The black community doesn't like getting in trouble for breaking the law, police should withdraw and leave them to it.

Are Blackies humans 🌚 Do they deserve their rights 🌚 Let November come and you will see astonishing results😁 Isn't USA presenting its image as a Racist Govt 🙄🇺🇸

QUESTION: A group of Black men in Louisville KY formed a human shield around a white cop who got separated from his unit to protect him from angry protesters. Can anyone post a picture of a group of white cops forming a human shield & protecting a Black man from police violence?

Apparently there’s an investigation as to why there were outside agitators causing violence. Some arrests revealed that some white nationalists were there to create chaos. I wouldn’t be surprised.

Growing up, law enforcement and I had a ...strained relationship, but there was respect. Respect is earned, and shit like killing unarmed... no.

That is news?

OBAMAGATE

What I seem not to understand about this whole drama is: 1. Are people protesting against police brutality? Or 2. That the deceased was an African American? If it's the latter, then what should a police officer do when an African American tries to resist arrest?

And they are getting their point across by burning down and looting their city

“Activists say.”

We should be defunding police departments if they refuse to remove murderous cops

I'm sure that rioting, burning buildings and destroying businesses will improve relationships between cops and the black community. Hasn't history shown that to be true? Don't stop doing that which works.

'after a white police officer pressed his knee' - minimizes the murderous direct action of that officer intentionally choking/suffocating Floyd. Do better.

Liberals don’t want progress. Hate fuels their power and process.

Black people working together to bring their crime rate down would be a good start.

After these riots, I've lost interest. Should have stuck to protesting. I'm out.

You think? There’s been a whole lot of work that needs to be done for decades! It starts at home and holding people accountable. Not all police are bad and not all police are good. Pinching someone for unorthodox behavior only condones and exasperates the behavior.

Step 1) defund the police

Sets relations back to the 50s

You are posting lies. Truth: 'after a white police officer killed Mr. Floyd'

Stop putting blood in the water. As usual media has shown it doesn’t care about country encouraging RIOTS ! Fact check this !
