Before Brittney Griner, there was Naama Issachar, an American Israeli woman who was in a Russian prison for 10 months for traveling with a small amount of cannabis. “I know what she’s going through.”

Griner’s lawyer, Alexander Boikov, said Griner admitted that the vape canisters were hers but said she had taken them to Russia unintentionally.

She waited 20 hours for information, giving her enough time to contact the Israeli Embassy. Her mom jumped on a plane to Russia and spent the next 10 months helping secure her daughter’s release. There she shared a cell with 40 other women and was allowed outside only one hour a day. She was not given toilet paper, shampoo or even feminine hygiene products, and she relied on her mother to deliver necessary goods.

Issachar, who is writing a book about her experience, said she tried to remain positive throughout her imprisonment, keeping a gratitude journal and making friends with some of her cellmates. She always made it a point to thank the prison guards.

LeBron Critical on His Show of US Efforts to Get Griner HomeLeBron James is publicly criticizing the United States’ handling of WNBA All-Star Brittney Griner’s case in a trailer for an upcoming episode of his television show: “The Shop: Uninterrupted.” Griner is on trial in Russia for drug possession. She pleaded guilty last week and will appear again in court on Thursday. James tweeted Tuesday night that his comments in the trailer weren’t intended to be critical of the U.S. efforts to get Griner back. It’s unclear when the show was filmed, although in the trailer it’s mentioned she had been in Russia for over 110 days which would be roughly five weeks ago. LeBron James on Brittney Griner's detainment in Russia: 'Do I even want to go back to America''Over 110 days, now how could she feel like America has her back?' LeBron James said. 'I would be feeling like, 'Do I even want to go back to America?'' Interesting.. I recall she wouldn’t stand for the National Anthem but now wants America to help her. WE all make poor choices, but the Federal Government isn’t expected to “fix” things for US. There’ve been extremely uncomfortable relations between the US & Russia, yet she CHOSE to go anyway; & she PLED GUILTY to a crime there, knowing OTHER AMERICANS have been held for YEARS. Americans have a misguided idea that the U.S. govt can have you out of a foreign jail before lunch. I lived in Saudi Arabia for 10 years...the U.S. cannot help you do anything but provide basic passport services. You can't go somewhere and violate their laws.
