, which is located at 5350 Sebastopol Road, will continue operating through the end of May before it eventually shutters its storefront operation and shifts its focuses to retail. According to the Democrat, the closure follows a financial downturn when the pandemic destabilized the business and fewer customers opted for in-person shopping.
“It was a really difficult decision, as we know the storefront means a lot to the community,” Heidi Orrock-Diestel, marketing manager at Willie Bird Turkeys, told the Democrat. “So many local stores and restaurants also carry Willie Bird products that it makes more sense for us to support them, instead of compete.” Orrock-Diestel added that the aged storefront, which first opened in 1975, was on track for major upgrades that would have been costly.
The long-standing business has deeper ties in Sonoma County starting in the early 1960s when fourth-generation rancher William “Willie” Benedetti envisioned a better turkey business for his family ranch, Benedetti Farms. The venture began when Benedetti gathered about 500 turkey eggs as part of a school project and successfully hatched the eggs and raised the young flock, which was later sold to locals during the holiday season.
