Oil has spilled into the waters surrounding Pelican Island near Galveston, Texas, after a barge hit a bridge leading to the island on Wednesday. The barge hit the bridge at around 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning, The Associated Press reported, which caused a closure of the only road leading to the island. As of publication of this article, crews were reportedly working to clean up the spill, assisted by the U.S. Coast Guard. No injuries occurred during the collision, KHOU 11 reported.
The collision comes nearly two months after the Dali, a nearly 1,000-foot-long container ship, hit one of the Francis Scott Key Bridge support columns in Baltimore, Maryland, in the early morning hours of March 26, causing the entire structure to snap apart in several places and fall into the river.Videos showed the Dali losing power and then careening into the bridge, which immediately collapsed. Six workers who were on the bridge at the time of its collapse were killed.
