Motorists are advised to take alternate routes utilizing the Wallace Tunnel or the Africatown Bridge and I-65 as part of their commute across the Mobile Bay. ALDOT is aiming to complete the generator upgrade in a timely manner, possibly reopening the tunnel sooner than the allotted time frame. The Bankhead Tunnel first opened to traffic in 1941, and the new generator is one part of the landmark tunnel’s ongoing electrical upgrades, ALDOT said. This total generator replacement will be followed by lighting upgrades inside the tunnel.
