From the time the plants are put in the sand, they begin to create a barrier for blowing sand to build up against. Contractors are finishing that up now along Gulf State Park’s 2.5 miles of beachfront.

) - A months-long, multimillion-dollar beach restoration project is wrapping up in Gulf Shores with the planting of hundreds of thousands of sea oats. All of this is to help the beach withstand the impacts of severe weather and tropical systems.

Sea oats and other native grasses and ground cover are being planted to build and reinforce the dunes there.“The sea oats have roots that are about thirty feet that go down into the sand and throughout the entire dune structure.

“We teach the older students, the high schoolers and then the second day, we bring in the younger students and the high school students mentor those younger students because we’ve learned that kids tend to listen to kids and so, if they’re learning it from high schoolers, they’re more likely to take it to heart,” said Reetz.
