The National Pork Producers Council has asked the U.S. Department of Agriculture for federal aid to help pay for retrofitting hog facilities around the nation to fill the gap. Hog farmers said they haven’t complied because of the cost and because California hasn’t yet issued formal regulations on how the new standards will be administered and enforced.
The California Department of Food and Agriculture said that although the detailed regulations aren’t finished, the key rules about space have been known for years. Josh Balk, who leads farm animal protection efforts at the Humane Society of the United States, said the pork industry should accept the overwhelming view of Californians who want animals treated more humanely.
To afford the expense, Mogler said, he’d need to earn an extra $20 per pig and so far, processors are offering far less. At least initially, analysts predict that even as California pork prices soar, customers elsewhere in the country will see little difference. Eventually, California’s new rules could become a national standard because processors can’t afford to ignore the market in such a large state.
Yea them thar pigs need a safe habitat! I believe this will start a Governor recall for sure! I can just see guys with camo and guns storming Sacramento capitol! We want our bacon now!
'Bacon may disappear in California' is not only biased - it's nonsense - completely made up, exaggerated, fearmongering People will buy bacon, so bacon will be sold - nobody doubts this AP would fail any journalism class with this headline
So these pig farmers have had since 2018 to get into compliance and haven’t? They are really into animal cruelty.
Lol CA is its own country.
The less food including meat you take out of the consumable items the higher the price of other items and ultimately the public will go hungry and there will be mass starvation among the public in the years to come. There is not enough plant-based to sustain the world.
I really feel that Californians are really not 100% informed on what this really means. Food is becoming harder to grow produce distribute which increases the cost. When you see your food bill double in the years to come you will understand. Hopefully it’s not too late.
Good.
The way America cooks bacon until it's burnt and tasteless i don't think it's a loss.
Its Covid foods time🤩🤩 ... the world can breath more freely too
Good law.
Veal? The cruelest of all.
What's next, more space between rows of corn ?
This is a shit tweet
okay that's fine no big deal
Bacon isn't going to disappear in California you alarmist nutjobs
Eating pork is unhealthy. Just stop.
people who never grew up after 2011 reeling rn
未来某一天会不会也要考虑下蔬菜水果的感受呢
We’re still doing veal calves? 😢🙄🤮
it absolutely will not be 'harder to find' the laws being enforced are about treating the animals slightly better before killing them

fake news
So is this OK, too?
Let them eat cake!
Lol. Did Big Ag write this headline?
Sensationalist much?
Yeah, who cares about animal abuse so long as breakfast is cheap?
Bacon isn't going to disappear in CA...absolutely no way.
WillKlintworth
Why are you fear-mongering a good change? 🙄
Farmers=Methane FarmersDONTcare
I think it's important to make the distinction between a farmer who raises pigs for food in an environment suited to them & a 90,000 sq. ft. warehouse/assembly line where pigs lie in their own filth most of their short lives. Besides being inhumane & filthy - no big deal, right?
Omg whatever. The supply will be fine. Jesus.
Let's dial back the terror from 100 to 98 for the pigs and chickens. That'll fix everything. Animal agriculture is horrific for them and it's killing our climate.
Really? Pork, chicken, and beef farmers can't keep their livestock in inhumane conditions? These things will go away simply because a chicken is required to live in a henhouse or calves will be able to move their legs? Please.
California doesn’t deserve bacon
They dont have trucks to bring in bacon from other states in CA?
Good. There's many alternatives that could have been taken by factory farms before they got to where they are now. Food science is progressing and I'm all for a more sustainable future.
California bacon probably causes cancer too….
Good.
Good. There’s no reason what so ever for animals to suffer before death.
So what! Animal abuse should not be tolerated. Period.
Fuckafornia
All of Cali RN
We cannot have humane animal rearing? How petulant is that? We deserve Trump and his kind.
My heart breaks for bacon lovers. No, actually it really doesn't.
And? Pretty sure the rest of the world doesn't model itself after California.

Bacon won't be harder to find and costs won't be that bad.
Wrap the covid vaccine in bacon, quick!
The final straw
'Could.' 'May.' That's some hard-hitting journalism, there. No wonder no one buys newspapers.
Pigs, chickens, cows etc should have the same rights as dogs and cats. Some humans shouldn't be hypocrites. How do we select which to pet and which to eat.
Turkey bacon? 😝
noo now all the veal is going to be tough . of they can move its jist young cow .
Stupid is as AP does.
Have you seen the farrowing crates they lock breeding sows up in? They can't do anything except stand up and lie down. For years. No bacon is worth that kind of torture. It's totally possible to produce bacon humanely.
Violent crime is spiking, shoplifting is all but legal, homelessness has increased, once beautiful streets and parks are covered in human feces, trash, and drug refuse…but they have pig rules
What the fuck is this headline
A first step for modern, responsible, animal farming. But it’s still fractional pig farmers balking at 24 square feet (2.2 sq m) vs current 20sq ft. Cali voted for a size that the pig can turn & stretch. Like, D*mn, don’t be too generous. That’s 8 big pigs in a single car garage.
Yes, because corporations have taken over the farming industry & creating unsanitary conditions for animals which isn’t good for humans
I like bacon a decent amount, but this seems like a good thing.
I can eat less bacon to treat the pigs better
I see a new updated version of smoky and the bandit where they haul bacon from east to west
There's nothing bad about animal welfare ffs
National standards/regulations needed. It will just move to more and/or bigger breeding operations and CAFO's elsewhere, increasing the nitrogen content of the Missouri/Mississippi basin waters. Impact on pricing negligible.
Capitalism hates animal rights
I’ve been to California. Never saw that it was so great to put up with its high cost of living and associated control freak over-regulation. 🤔
Good. It's about time. These poor animals!
Perhaps more people need to experience the conditions these animals are subjected to so they can have their favorite meat on their tables
Pigs have rights yet we still have mass shootings? Where are our priorities?
Oh, give me a break. I already buy pork, eggs, chicken, and bacon from farmers who raise pigs and chickens humanely, and it's neither expensive nor hard to find.
Sorry--not really--but pigs are too sentient for me to be comfortable butchering them wholesale for food, and pork was my favorite meat.
Ok
good luck
What a great pun!
Get ready for massive increases in food prices….Y’all on the left better start screaming for 30 dollars an hour…15 an hour isn’t gonna get ya far😂
It’s already $10 a pack.
Good.
First the earthquakes, then the drought, then the high taxes, then ANOTHER recall election, then flash floods and now no bacon?! No wonder everyone is abandoning California.
Great news!
🍷 Wine country swine country 🐖
EAT TURKEY BACON
😂
Maybe California should focus on real issues. Like homelessness and their crazy debt issues. 🤷🏻♂️
It's called paying the *actual* cost. It's fine.
