Swiss director Andreas Fontana’s simmering debut moves through the rarefied spaces of the globalized aristocracy—but the rich are feeling rattled

Swiss director Andreas Fontana’s stylish, simmering debut, explores the dizzying world of high finance and extreme wealth against the sultry backdrop of Argentina.

The setting is late-1970s Buenos Aires—the height of the Dirty War—and the country is under the thumb of a military dictatorship. Private banking scion Yvan has arrived from Geneva with his wife, Ines , to step in for a firm partner who’s inexplicably gone missing and assuage their moneyed clientele. Eventually he realizes the scope of his partner’s work—and the true nature of his profession. We see this elite world through the couple’s foreign, if cosmopolitan, eyes.

Buenos Aires has the patina of Europe—Borges called Argentines Europeans in exile—but looks are deceiving. Likewise, for all its sinister machinations, only masquerades as a political thriller. It’s actually more interested in the cloistered, hypercompetitive world of private banking and its culture, codes, obsequiousness, and secret slang.
