Earlier this month, Chile commemorated 50 years of the military coup that overthrew Salvador Allende’s socialist regime. Left-wing leaders from all over Latin America were invited by President Gabriel Boric to attend ahonoring Allende and condemning General Augusto Pinochet, who took over power on September 11th, 1973.
But the event was nothing more than an act of political propaganda, showing the Left’s ideological dogmatism and complete lack of acknowledgement of its own responsibility in the destruction of Chilean democracy a half-century ago. of the KGB since the 1960s and Soviet funding was crucial for his victory in the 1970 presidential race. Thus, as soon as he took office, Allende began a ruthless transition to a centrally planned economy.13 percent of mining production; by 1973, this had reached 85 percent. During the same period, the government’s share of industrial production increased from three to 40 percent. In public services, it rose from 25 to 100 percent, not to mention the transportation sector and communications .
