Prior to 2020, audiences for some of U.S. TV’s biggest events had already been falling for years. But in retrospect, that was aOnce COVID-19 hit, a change occurred in traditional viewership patterns. Perhaps aided by audiences turning to streaming during the first months of the pandemic in 2020 and never quite coming back, awards shows that took place in the late summer and fall last year averaged audience declines of -34.2% versus the prior year, per Variety Intelligence Platform analysis.
It’s possible the event won’t see as massive a decline as the other five awards shows that have already aired in 2021. But the Academy and ABC may want to brace for what is almost certainly going to be a significant decline of some kind, based on the results of data from a survey VIP teamed up with leading research firmFar and away the most popular reason for lack of interest was respondents not caring about the movies or actors nominated.
Of note, the most popular write-in responses to “Other” were “just not being interested” and the perception that the ceremony is now “too political.”

who cares, right an article about how they removed the homeless ppl from the area and how snobbish/wrong that is
Let's wait til there is no more pandemic before killing the Oscars.
They could have done a better job of advertising the broadcast. I only accidentally found out when they were held last week, and I even follow TheAcademy!
Wow 😳
I don't see the leftsacrs.
antonystarr oscarssodone
Unfortunately, this is actually the case...
antonystarr 🤔🤔
When they don't make truly great and memorable films to root for anymore, it's hard to get excited about awards shows.
The majority of the country don’t care about the Hollywood elites who look down and belittle most Americans, hopefully the ratings will continue to drop, eventually TheAcademy will hold their awards on zoom.
all the TheAcademy awards go to elite art and drama types, and the politically correct... I haven’t watched this in ten years, why would anyone not part of that elite art and drama group care ?
Is that today?
we see every famous celeb whatever you wanna say em all day every day now so who needs to “tune in” to see them anymore or see their overexposed fashion choices anymore. Its a mystery i know
Yeah, just ain't felling it this year.
until more mainstream (not superhero) movies are made that are actually entertaining to watch, no one cares about which movie wins. and making it a 2-3 hour show is also ill-conceived at this point. make it an hour, give out the main awards and do a live stream for the rest.
really variety..maybe you should explain all the reasons why eyes are down in our new digital/social media age instead of just harping on “ratings decline” as if the world was ending
They will be lucky to get 10million viewers. The movies nominated are basically overrated NON mass audience grabbers plus by now it is apparent that the general public does not deem it appropriate for celebs to be taking home gold statues during a pandemic!
We already know who is going to win. Oscars is the last show of the season. AND IT'S BORING.
we can watch the speeches on youtube the next day. there’s no surprises anymore. we need another streaker
🤭...
It’s unwatchable
Damn timheidecker having an effect
We're in the pandemic. Ya think this is an appropriate to count?
Honestly so what ... every live event ratings declined in the recent years.
Celebrating celebrities who get overpaid to act is on the Out List. The world is changed.
You can guilt the 'woke' agenda of the academy.
I mean...all the way? They’ll continue to drop and then the whole ceremony can happen behind closed doors or on a podcast. Modern equivalent of the beginning.
I’d love for it to go low enough that they just mail the awards out to the winners, rather than hold a ceremony. Streep can just check her mailbox each April to see if won
