Analysis: With no comedian and no Trump, author Chernow gives White House correspondents' dinner a reset

Michelle Wolf blasts White House Correspondents' Association for nixing comedy for historian Ron Chernow

The author began by recalling President George Washington, but soon moved on to contemporary matters. And while he stayed largely clear of the controversial terrain of last year’s event, Chernow didn’t pull any political punches. Chernow concluded the speech with a joke. “As we head into an election season, I leave you with one final gem from Twain,” he said.

Olivier Knox, the outgoing president of the White House Correspondents Association, said he’d considered hiring either a musician or an author to deliver the speech at the event, which hands out scholarships as well as awards. He said he did not want the dinner to be about Trump this year. “This is not his dinner. It is ours and it should stay ours.”

Decorum is not the opposite of funny or humor. It is application of class, consideration, and openness in all interactions. The world is in need of large portions of this wonderful style and way of life. Bravo to Chernow.

Should of been at Trump Rally in Wisconsin.

Must be really boring 🙄

The Whitehouse Correspondents Dinner has been infected with the same Liberal CANCER as the Oscar's - It's now nothing but a wankfeist for fakenews

😄

'Trumponomics' author blames Obama for Great Recession, mocks student loan forgiveness plansFormer Reagan economist and 'Trumponomics' author Arthur Laffer ridiculed Americans with student loan debt and blamed the 2007 Great Recession on Barack Obama, who didn't begin his presidential term until January 2009. Hahaha they have forgotten G Bushe's and GOP tickle down economic policies or what Obama got from them and where he brought it so Trump can brag for his economy. Laffer may or may not be a great economist but he is a lousy historian. I'm sure that Obama would be amazed at his powers to start a recession before he was elected president.

Fewer Americans seeing crucial Social Security document due to budget cuts(The opinions expressed here are those of the author, a columnist for Reuters.) Gee Social Security would have zero problems if every single penny taken out of the trust by countless POTUS’s for their pet projects were returned with interest. Why isn’t MSM shedding a light on what the real reasons are for the looming deficit? Well if they didn't misuse the money. What kind of fund allowed them to dip in and not replace. Sounds criminal to me. Find the money boys. Telling us it's gone isn't going to work. Start with CEOs with the big raises. How dare you play games with Social Security. REPLACE IT What % of people opened the letter and read it? I agree it’s a problem that people are less likely to have access but context is needed on how many open the letter and toss it once it’s obvious it’s not an immediate concern.
