Melbourne brought in sweeping new curfew rules to battle the spread of a resurgent coronavirus outbreak. Large parts of its economy including retail and manufacturing will be shut as part of a six- week lockdown

MELBOURNE - Australia’s second-biggest city, Melbourne, already under night curfew, announced fresh restrictions on industries including retail and construction on Monday in a bid to contain a resurgence of the coronavirus.

Having already imposed the strictest restrictions on movement, Victoria declared a “state of disaster” on Sunday. The latest moves in Victoria meant production at meatworks would be cut by one-third, construction activities and staffing at distribution centres would also be scaled back and all schools would return to remote learning.

Andrews announced A$5,000 payments for affected businesses and flagged more announcements about penalties, enforcement and education on Tuesday. “What we’re dealing with here is a disaster,” Prime Minister Scott Morrison said at a media conference.

Does this mean we can stop comparing the US to Australia?

This in part is enabled by the mirage of fiat money, the idea that the private sector can be frozen in place without economic consequences that cannot be remediated by creating money out of thin air. But government cannot create wealth. It takes from the only source.
