Austintown Fitch's Sydnie Watts watches as her teammates celebrate a solo home run Friday, May 24, 2024, in the fifth inning of the OHSAA Division I softball regional finals in Youngstown. Fitch beat Walsh Jesuit, 8-2.YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Once Sydnie Watts belted a deep home run to left-center field that hit a light pole at the Youngstown State Softball Complex, Walsh Jesuit’s rematch with Austintown Fitch felt eerily similar to last year’s OHSAA Division I regional final.
A year ago, Watts starred in the pitchers circle and sent a huge blast beyond the fence in Youngstown during anof the Warriors. Walsh Jesuit returned this time as the No. 1-ranked team in the state coaches poll and had its ace, Minnesota recruit Natalie Susa, who missed last year’s game because of injury.
Leadoff hitter and Army recruit Sienna Tepley followed with a walk, but Watts responded with her final strikeout to end the short rally. “Walsh is a great team, not only in Ohio but the whole country,” Watts said. “Natalie’s a great pitcher and we knew this was going to be a hard game. Honestly, before the season this is where we knew we’d meet up.”
