Vanessa Gonzalez got to represent her city by kicking off the SXSW Comedy Festival.

AUSTIN, Texas — SXSW Comedy Festival is kicking off with a show hosted by Austin comedian Vanessa Gonzalez.

Gonzalez has been doing comedy for nearly 15 years, starting her career in the Capital City before gaining national recognition. Before the pandemic hit, she said she moved to Los Angeles to take her career to the next level. The move led to features on Comedy Central, HBO and a show with Will Smith on Roku TV. But COVID-19 forced her to make a move back to Austin, where it all began.

Now back home, Gonzalez gets to represent the city that made her into the comedian she is today at one of the biggest festivals in the country. “South By has always been this big thing here in Austin,” Gonzalez said. “I feel super honored and flattered that they invited.” Getting that SXSW spot can be tough for local comedians. It took Gonzalez 15 years and some national recognition before she was tapped for the fest. She believes her spot on the show is a sign to her fellow Austin comics that performing on that big of a stage can be done.Gonzalez began her career as a pre-school teacher who did comedy on the side. Eventually she took the leap to making comedy full time, moving to Los Angeles and taking her career to the next level.
