The Austin planning commission heard public comments on proposed land use code changes, with residents divided on affordability and lot size issues.

Thu, April 11th 2024 at 4:54 PMOn Thursday, the Austin planning commission heard public comment s on proposed changes to the city's land use code , which was last updated in 1984, with affordability and lot size being the main topics of discussion. proposed update to the land codeAfter years of wrangling over a land use code , it’s pretty clear Austin ites have strong and differing opinions about it -- so much so that the last time it was overhauled was in 1984.

“The overwhelming housing expenses to turn a lot of people from wanting to live in Austin, which is extremely disappointing because a beautiful city like Austin should not be defined by the cost of living, “ said Hannah Thomas, a University of Texas at Austin student. Like many commenters, she talked about how expensive it is to live in Austin, something they blame at least partly on the current land use code.
