Fri, May 10th 2024 at 10:54 PMThe Austin ISD Board of Trustees discussed their budget for the upcoming school year during a work session Thursday evening.
The main issue facing the district is its roughly $60 million deficit. As a result, the district is tasked with considering about $30 million in cuts.Today, the district said necessary cuts have to be made."The proposed cut of 2 of our directors in our program, the multi-lingual program, is absolutely unacceptable," said one AISD teacher during Thursday's meeting.
Hopkins said, with the cuts in his department, bilingual students will lose quality in their education. "Where the district decides to go with this cut, will really show us a lot about where its commitment is to multilingual education," he said. The district has previously touted itself on the Dual Language Program, with nearly 1/3 of the student population enrolled in the program."We're at a point now where almost nothing isgoing to be impacted due to the magnitude of cuts we have to take across the district," added Segura.
In addition, the district said 41 positions in the Central Office have been eliminated due to the district's deficit.
