Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced yesterday that he'll back removing military commanders from decisions to prosecute sexual assault and other related crimes

"I'm willing to work with those members to ensure that they get answers to their questions," Menendez said Tuesday. "I am planning a members briefing for the beginning of the July work period so we will all have an opportunity to hear directly from the administration and to question State and Defense Department officials concerning the proposed repeal."

Following the July briefing, Menendez said he hoped to get a vote on the legislation back on the agenda "soon thereafter."Army Secretary Christine Wormuth delivered a fresh warning to senators that Army National Guard training could be hindered if lawmakers don't reimburse $450 million expended on the monthslong Capitol deployment.

"If we are not able to cover that, right now the Army Guard is basically in a situation where they are concerned about their ability to pay for training for the rest of this year," Wormuth told the Senate Defense Appropriations panel. A supplemental funding bill for Capitol security improvements included money to reimburse the Guard for the deployment, but the bill has stalled in the Senate. National Guard Bureau chief Gen. Daniel Hokanson previously testified that the money is needed by August to prevent any slippage in training.The Senate Armed Services Committee easily approved five Pentagon nominees on Tuesday, all of whom testified at a confirmation hearing last week.
