On Thursday, the Austin City Council authorized the submission of a grant application to the U.S. Department of Transportation for funds that would be used to reconnect Downtown Austin with East Austin.

Caps are also referred to as decks, land bridges, or lids. Caps would be put over lowered sections of the interstate to connect Downtown Austin with East Austin. A stitch is a widened bridge over the interstate. Austin’s“We have the opportunity to envision and construct a truly spectacular public space. One focused on green space which is necessary for all Central Texans, but also one focused on arts and community that is welcoming for all,” said Brown.

The Austin City Council voted to move forward with trying to get the federal grant to help pay for the caps and stitches in the I-35 corridor between 4th and 12th Streets.
