A special presentation was also made to three of the six Aurora firefighters who traveled to New York immediately following the attacks to help with recovery efforts. Aurora Fire Division Chief Jason Demas, Fire Battalion Chief Randy Leek and Fire Battalion Chief Will Torres accepted plaques at the event on behalf of their colleagues.In 2001, they were joined by now-retired firefighters Gary Pozzi, Tim Poque and the late Mark Lockwood during their mission in New York.
Muhammad noted that in previous years, the ceremony started an hour later “but in order to be more authentic we’ve having it at 7:30 in order to ring the bells here at the same time the tower was hit in New York.” Aurora Fire Chief David McCabe speaks during the ceremony in Aurora Monday remembering the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States.
About 50 people attended the ceremony in addition to local officials and members of the police and fire departments, and many reflected on the fateful day more than two decades ago and the changes it has brought to our society.
