Athletics’ right-hander Mitch Spence pitched 4 2/3 innings against Kansas City in his first major league start Friday night.Left-hander Cole Ragans kept A’s bats in silent mode Friday night, with the Kansas City Royals winning 6-2 at Kaufman Stadium.
Coming on the heels of being dominated in four games by the Houston Astros, the A’s loss was their sixth straight, which extends their longest winless streak of the season. They’ve now lost eight of the last nine and 11 of their last 13 games in falling to 19-28. Massey reached Austin Adams for a two-run home run in the sixth inning. It brought home Salvador Perez, who walked to lead off the inning.The ninth different starting pitcher for the Athletics in the last 13 games, Mitch Spence acquitted himself well, giving up just one run in 4 2/3 innings with one walk and four strikeouts.
“I was excited to get the start,” Spence said. “It’s something I always wanted to do and I tried to stick with what I know.” The series continues Saturday with A’s right-hander Ross Stripling opposing the Royals’ Seth Lugo and lefty J.P. Sears facing Brady Singer .— Hogan Harris, who is due a couple days rest anyway after pitching 3 1/3 innings in Houston Thursday night, was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas to make room for Brandon Bielak, who was acquired from Houston for cash considerations.
