Legendary commentator Phil Liggett, covering his 45th Tour de France this month, has opened up this most European of sports to English-speaking audiences.

First, the Tour de France runs daily for three solid weeks, with broadcasts of each stage running to five or more hours. That’s a lot of airtime to fill, no matter how compelling the event might be. And to be honest, large chunks of any stage bicycle race, including the TdF, are not compelling.

Liggett has made both of these tasks look easy for decades. He can spot riders in a fast-moving crowd, identifying who is moving to the front and providing a running commentary on individual and team tactics, then amp up the excitement when things start moving quickly. He can simplify the complexities of the sport or tease details from his colleagues without belaboring the technicalities.
