At least nine European Union countries and the bloc's executive arm have called for new sanctions on Belarus over a disputed election and a crackdown on protesters there, ahead of emergency talks among member states on Friday.

BRUSSELS - At least nine European Union countries and the bloc’s executive arm have called for new sanctions on Belarus over a disputed election and a crackdown on protesters there, ahead of emergency talks among member states on Friday.

Any EU decision on sanctions would require unanimity. The meeting will be a first full discussion, with any final decisions expected later this month. “We would need to find a careful balance between pressure against and engagement with Belarus President Lukashenko. We believe the EU should assume the role of a mediator as soon as possible,” said the letter, seen by Reuters.Diplomatic sources said the main sceptic was Hungary, which has previously called for all EU sanctions on Minsk to be lifted.

The bloc first imposed sanctions on Belarus in 2004. It stepped them up in 2011 over abuses of human rights and democratic standards, including vote rigging.

Wow, 9 Out of 28.... what a strong signal... the EU united and strong as always... omg

Be careful that Belarus does not fall into Putin's clutches, which would be even worse.

9 out of 28 MS? That's only 1/3

How come none of them back sanctions against the ShiaISIS regime occupying Iran? Is it cause Belarus doesn’t have much oil?

That's what happens when you don't take the payola

Great imposition.

Belarus says police fired live rounds at protesters as EU weighs sanctionsBelarus said on Wednesday that police had fired live rounds at protesters in the city of Brest and arrested more than 1,000 people nationwide, intensifying a crackdown that has prompted the European Union to weigh new sanctions on Minsk. This reminds of Ceausescu's fall from power. Once live rounds are used, those who do the firing have to deal with their conscience. Of course, there are diehard supporters of the regime, but many police officers will eventually recoil at shooting civilians. BloodSpite Not into masked protesters anymore. Are they even Belarussians? Who knows? Interesting juxtaposition between tweet and photo.
