BREAKING UPDATE: At least 22 people are dead after the remnants of Hurricane Ida battered New York and New Jersey with tornadoes, record rain and flooding on Thursday.

The weather and flooding brought New York transit to a near standstill, with service suspended or severely limited across the subway system.

Passaic Mayor Hector C. Lora declared a state of emergency, one of several area cities to do so. He livestreamed the scene as cars were submerged up to their headlights in a flooded section of the city of around 70,000. Some cars were struck in the middle of the street. At least one tornado struck Mullica Hill, New Jersey, forecasters said. At least nine homes were destroyed,. There were reports of damage across southeast Pennsylvania and in New Jersey, National Weather Service Meteorologist Sarah Johnson said, but survey teams will have to confirm if there were more tornadoes.

Soaking rains from the remnants of Hurricane Ida prompted the evacuations of thousands of people Wednesday after water reached dangerous levels at a dam near Johnstown, a Pennsylvania town nicknamed Flood City. Nearby Hinckston Run Dam was also being monitored but appeared stable by late afternoon, he said, by which time water levels at Wilmore dam were receding.Gov. Tom Wolf of Pennsylvania said he was sending emergency responders to Bucks County, including National Guard high-water vehicles and an urban search-and-rescue team, in the southeastern past of the state following tornadoes and flooding.

The moisture can short the car's electrical system and compromise safety features such as air bags and anti-lock brakes. Flood-damaged cars also present another, less obvious, concern: health issues. They can develop mildew and mold, which can trigger allergic reactions...

If you will be working in or near a flooded area, wear chemical-resistant outer clothing, boots, protective eye goggles, and plastic or rubber gloves. Protective clothing is especially necessary when working in flooded areas with known chemical storage or chemical release hazards

The best tools for getting water out of a basement are a wet/dry shop vacuum and a dehumidifier. Set up the shop-vac so that it can suction up water. ... Suck up all standing water into the vacuum and deposit it outside of your house as far away from the foundation as possible.

The drying and dehumidification processes can take anywhere from a few hours to days, depending on the severity of the damage. All surfaces that have been affected by water damage must be cleaned, disinfected, and deodourized to properly eliminate any risk of mould, bacterial...

Stay calm. You'll need your wits about you. Turn on your headlights and hazard lights. ... Unbuckle your seat belt. Unlock your doors. Take jackets and outer clothing off. Lower your window slowly. ... If you can lower the windows, climb out. ...

So more people died in ny and new jersey than in new orleans from hurricane ida. Sadly this shows how dangerous floods can be. Killer storm surge was the reason so many died in Katrina.

Do not walk through flowing water. Most drownings occur during flash floods. ... Remember the phrase “Turn Around, Don't Drown!” Don't drive through flooded roads. Cars can be swept away in only two feet of moving water. ... Do not drive around road barriers.

If water levels creep up into the seats, doors, and dash, the water damage will total your car. Repairs could exceed your car's actual cash value and it's simply not worthwhile for your car insurance to proceed with repairs instead of calling it a total loss.
