Reported institutional support was the second-most ever at both schools, behind only the massive infusion in 2021, when college sports revenues nationwide cratered during the COVID-19 pandemic. Student fees at both schools continued to climb. The ASU athletics department reported total operating revenues of $121.1 million in fiscal 2022, the most since a record $121.7 million in 2019.
But the gains in 2022 were offset by $124 million in total operating expenses, the most since ASU athletics reported a record $126.8 million in expenses in 2018, when the Sun Devils generated a $13.1 million deficit. The Wildcats’ largest reported revenue streams in 2022 were combined institutional support and student fees , media rights payouts , donor contributions , ticket sales and royalties, licensing, advertisement and sponsors .
In 2022, UA reported it provided its athletics department with $27.9 million in institutional support — the second-most ever, behind only the $53.3 million infusion in 2021, when the Wildcats’ athletics department closed the year with an $8.3 million surplus.
