Stability has long eluded Forrest Whitley, the wunderkind now working back from another arm ailment. His career contains too many detours to detail, but declaring him finished is foolish.

Forrest Whitley, who had Tommy John surgery in March 2021, has thrown 13 innings over six appearances for the Sugar Land Space Cowboys this year.SUGAR LAND — Whitley is only 24 years old, hard to fathom given how long his Astros tenure feels.

Whitley threw most of his bullpen sessions at around 80 percent effort and discovered more precise command. He studied much of the damage inflicted against him before surgery and started throwing a new pitch to counter it. None of the revelations arrived as any grand surprise.“I feel like I was always on a good path. It was just a matter of me being bought in or not,” Whitley said. “Right now I feel the most stable I’ve ever been in my career.

“I think that’s a big obstacle he’s overcome. There’s still work ahead, but I think once he realizes, ‘I don’t have to overthrow to throw hard. I don’t have to overthrow to be nasty. The stuff is just there, and you can be under control and be that same nasty guy,' that’s a big step in the right direction for Forrest.”
