Astronomers have discovered a new, Earth-sized planet that revolves around an ultra-cool red dwarf star. This peculiar planetary system is located relatively close to the Earth, just 55 light-years away.
The recent finding is part of the Search for Planets EClipsing ULtra-cOOl Stars project, which is led by the University of Liège in Belgium in partnership with other universities.This new Earth-sized planet orbits its star in just 17 hours. Moreover, it is most likely tidally locked, with one side constantly facing the star.
The SPECULOOS-3 is roughly the size of gas giant Jupiter, which makes it ten times less massive than our Sun. Moreover, it is twice as cold and less luminous than the Sun.
