Asian shares were mostly lower in muted trading Tuesday on continuing concerns about surging COVID-19 infections in key regional markets like Japan.

Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 NIK, -0.19% edged down nearly 0.2% in morning trading. South Korea’s Kospi 180721, +0.24% gained 0.1% while Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 XJO, +0.45% gained 0.4%. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng HSI, -1.55% dipped 1.5%, while the Shanghai Composite SHCOMP, -0.75% fell 0.5%. Stocks gained in Malaysia FBMKLCI, +0.71% but fell in Singapore STI, -1.23%, Taiwan Y9999, -0.66% and Indonesia JAKIDX, -0.29%.

Global investors have their eyes on several key U.S. economic reports later this week, including consumer confidence on Tuesday and the closely watched monthly employment survey from the Labor Department on Friday. On Wall Street on Monday, gains for several Big Tech stocks helped push the S&P 500 SPX, +0.43% and the Nasdaq composite COMP, +0.90% to more record highs. The S&P 500 added 19.42, or 0.4%, to close at 4,528.79 The Dow DJIA, -0.16% fell 55.96 points, or 0.2%, to 35,399.84 and the Nasdaq composite rose 136.39 points, or 0.9%, to 15,265.89.
