During a cupping session, a trained practitioner places small cups, often made of glass, onto the skin in order to create a seal and suction force, the NCCIH explains, raising the area of skin over which the cup is placed. That suction action can be created by pumping air out or by applying a flame to the cup before placing it on the skin, according to the NCCIH.
