UPDATE: Observations taken around 9 a.m. Sunday from U.S. satellite imagery, and also confirmed by pilots diverting around the volcanic ash, indicated the ash cloud continues to moving south-southeast steadily at 100 mph.

The latest forecast path continues to be adjusted southeastward and now places the ash over the southeast Gulf of Alaska by mid-afternoon Sunday, located southwest of Juneau and Sitka, then continues above open water well to the southwest of Prince of Wales Island around 9 p.m. The ash is then expected to dissipate as it moves farther south and west into the early morning hours on Monday.

According to the National Weather Service’s Anchorage Aviation Weather Unit, even though much of the forecast takes the ash over the Gulf and eastern Pacific, aircraft will still have to continue to divert their paths around the ash to avoid any damage to the engines. According to the weather unit, each airline makes their own decisions about alternating flight paths based on the provided forecasts.
