The idea of abolishing the Electoral College has been around for decades, but the current proposal became more popular after Al Gore lost the 2000 election. It hinges on states agreeing to dedicate their electoral votes to whoever wins the overall popular vote for president, rather than dedicating their votes to the candidate who won their individual state.
While the plan's longtime backers have pushed it in large part on a philosophical basis, some frustrated Democrats have hopped aboard in hopes of avoiding a repeat of the 2000 and 2016 elections, where Republicans George W. Bush and Trump lost the popular vote but still claimed the presidency. Today, California, for instance, has 40 million residents and 55 electoral votes, while Wyoming has about 560,000 residents and three votes. That means Wyoming's electors represent about 186,300 voters apiece, while California's are proxy for more than 727,000 each. In other words, Wyoming's Electoral College votes count almost four times more than California's on a per-person basis.while others gain, as the nation's population shifts.
Haynes, who served in both the California Assembly and Senate starting in 1992, and served as chairman of the conservative American Legislative Exchange Council, argues the winner-takes-all approach used by 48 states and the District of Columbia improperly makes candidates focus on"a battleground precinct in a battleground city in a battleground county in a battleground state," giving residents in those areas a disproportionate amount of influence.
Selling out to NEWSOMES influence.
Clinton beat Trump by 3 million votes. In California she beat him by 4 million votes. The Electoral College is an imperfect means to protect states from being dominated by a single large state. When you exclude California, Trump won the popular vote by 1 million votes.
To Abolish or 'Essentially' Abolish something the Constitution guarantees, is Breaking the Constitution... Either Invoke Article 5 and change the Electoral College, or Live with it and be smarter about voting... The Constitution is Supreme Law, not ANY of the f*****s in Office...
About time. Get rid of that useless, unfair system.

I hate electoral college system. I won’t vote again if the next president won by the stupid electoral college. It’s wasting time for everyone at the polls because the popular votes don’t count.
Lincoln only had 40% of the popular vote.
The outdated electoral college should either be removed or revamped to reflect the popular vote. In our mass media internet age, there’s no need for segregation days swing state & spectator state machinations. All votes should count equally, no matter where people decide to live!
This is the United STATES of America. The Electoral College is there to ensue all STATES have a voice. If we go to popular vote, New York, California, Texas & Florida & major cities will get a bulk of the attention from Presidents because that is where the votes are.
Did you mean to write, “Colorado is the latest state to consider abolishing the constitution”
They need to get rid of that ancient piece of shit voting process, it is flawed and it works against people even if a person wins the popular vote.
Republics decline into democracies and democracies degenerate into despotism’s. Democracies have a long history of human cruelty because it allows a majority of voters the capability of exercising the cruelest oppression's on the minority.
Even the liberal justices in the SC will shut this down if it ever gets there.
The thing about the outdated electoral college is, it should either be removed or revamped to reflect the popular vote. In our mass media internet age there’s no need for swing states & spectator states etc... All votes should count equally, no matter where people decide to live!
Critics need to shut up. If anything the Electoral College gives rural areas and rural states too much say in who becomes President. NPV or no, the Electoral College needs to GO! By fiat of the populace or by the mechanisms in the Constitution, whichever gets it gone!
bad idea
