As Utahns face the steepest gas prices the state has ever encountered, Gov. Spencer Cox on Thursday said he was meeting with the state’s legislative leaders and budget analysts to find a solution to help families weather soaring costs.

Gov. Spencer Cox speaks at his monthly news conference in Salt Lake City on Thursday, March 17, 2022.As Utahns face the steepest gas prices the state has ever encountered, Gov. Spencer Cox on Thursday said he was meeting with the state’s legislative leaders and budget analysts to find a solution to help families weather the soaring costs.

During his monthly televised news conference on PBS Utah, the Republican governor said he had met with House Speaker Brad Wilson and Senate President Stuart Adams on Wednesday. Cox said he expects to meet with the state’s petroleum industry later this week. “These conversations are ongoing. We will be meeting with lots of different people that participate in the supply chain when it comes specifically to gas and petroleum products and see what we can do as a state to alleviate the pressure,” Cox said. “More broadly than just gas prices, this inflation has been happening for quite a while now is deeply concerning. Gas prices are a part of it, but people are feeling it with other ways as well.

California lawmakers this week are set to announce a proposal to offer a $400 tax rebate for its residents to weather high gas prices this year. When asked if Cox would consider a potential gas rebate for Utahns, the first-time governor said “Everything’s on the table.”, according to data released by AAA. That’s a nearly 9% increase from last week’s average cost of $4.01 per gallon of gas. Nationally, the average cost of a gallon gas sits at $4.29.

“People will have to change their habits,” he said. “That may mean ... that family vacation that people were planning on taking may not happen or will have to be shortened or kept closer to home.”

You mean that $8 'tax break' that Utah Republicans 'gave' us actually amounted to nothing?

Sheesh...I think the free month of public transport was successful, maybe just make that a thing permanently.

maybe he should hold some town halls to get some ideas from the people who live here? Get rid of the food tax, investigate the price gouging from oil companies who are making record profits, finding out why gas prices can still be going up when the price per barrel is down.

...And he did it while wearing the greenest tie you ever saw.

Maybe had we focused more on transit infrastructure, this wouldn’t be as big of a deal to as many people. Opps

Solution: more comprehensive (and free) public transit.

Suspend the gas tax and punish the oil companies gouging the shit out of gas prices while sitting on record high profits.

What about affordable housing? That is more out of control than gas prices.

Pretty sure that’s socialism…

You would think the tax break would have helped us poor Utahns.

He's not gonna help, just talk. They'll leave it up to the current administration (Bidens) and then take credit when help arrives.

Give us back some of these juicy profits and drop the bull. These guys are milking us all!

Yes let's find out how the current situation is not price fixing by the Oil companies.

Look up the term rockets and feathers it’s the long time oil industry price gouging strategy. Hedge funds and speculators drive the price. Oil companies control the faucets. That’s why they are called cartels

here’s a solution, stop giving tax breaks to the oil companies and give them to individuals

Wait? Isn’t that social welfare?

You mean like talking to Big Oil companies like BP about maybe NOT price gouging right now? That's a tough one for the 'pro-capitalism' side and would be rather 'big government' of them... dare I say even a tad socialist. Probably better off sticking to blindly blaming Biden.

Price gouging..

Is our $8 per month extra not covering it?

77.3% of Americans including large majorities of Democrats and Independents want more not less domestic oil and gas production.

I thought we all just supposed to go out and buy $60-80,000 electric cars? You know the administration and the lefts solution… We’ll all worry about base load power to keep them charged after we’ve all got them and quickly find the grid overwhelmed….

Who are we kidding, they'll probably just take this opportunity to sue the federal government to get more land to lease to oil companies.

Stop the gas tax for a while it would help us all. Especially people on low income. Stop thinking snout the rich for a while and think about the rest of us please.

Drive less; walk/bike more; use public transit; combine trips; carpool; etc. Lots of options that work for many (though not all). I don't understand why some commute 45 mins/day, each way, if they have other options (that's over 15 days/year worth of time spent commuting)

Taxing food harms the poor much more

Profits from oil companies to increase the wages of their lowest paid employees?

Remove the gas tax for a short while.

He should give Gavin Newsom a call. He's got a good plan.

Bay Area, rest of CA fall short of Gov. Newsom's voluntary 15% water conservation targetCalifornians used more water in January compared to before the drought emergency was declared, a sign that residents are ignoring the state's pleas to take the drought seriously and cut back. Should the voluntary cuts be mandatory? And how much of that water use is by pot farmers? Stop watering your golf courses and wineries, then, and stop filling street dividers with plants we don’t need there that now have to be watered. You can’t expect families to not use a very necessary resource. When will folks realize that the wealthy don’t care and will just throw more money at things? It’s why the middle class is getting squeezed out here. Do better CA.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine signs permitless concealed carry bill into lawEligible adults in Ohio will soon be able to carry a concealed handgun without a license or training following legislation signed into law Monday night by Republican Gov. Mike DeWine. Can a felon eventually become an 'eligible'. Wouldn't that put more illegal guns on the streets? This is what those eligible adults need. Yeah, right... Maybe they should take their weapons and fight in Ukraine. That way they could put those weapons to good use, instead of using them in their homeland.
