LULAC News

For all the criticism heaped on the largest, oldest Latino civil rights organization, reaching 95 is a big deal.

The League of United Latin American Citizens began its national convention in Las Vegas on Wednesday, just five years out from its centennial. That’s a big deal. For all the criticism heaped on the largest, oldest Latino civil rights organization — most for its internal political strife — reaching 95 is an achievement. Other organizations fizzled out over time, but LULAC — a vez cateada, a Spanish slang term for embattled — survives.

Catch up with Elaine’s podcast 'Nosotros' on YouTube Texas historian Cynthia Orozco argues that’s not by accident but a result of the strength of its foundation, its brilliantly written constitution and its intellectual founder Alonso S. Perales of San Antonio. A lot has changed since LULAC’s birth, but she says its history is yet to be fully appreciated and there remains misinformation about its origins. Perales was LULAC’s “principal founder,” the scholar said.

Biden asylum crackdown won’t stop the seekers Orozco followed with the most comprehensive biography of Perales to date, “Pioneer of Mexican American Civil Rights: Alonso S. Perales.” It’s filled with details. For example, Orozco says two words in LULAC’s name — Latin American — stemmed directly from Perales’ work as a U.S. diplomat in Latin America. “He had a hemispheric perspective, and he had total respect for Latin America,” she said.

will debut its traveling exhibit about Perales on Saturday at its visitor center, 2123 Buena Vista, beginning at 2 p.m. Before then, here’s one fascinating detail about LULAC and the legendary San Antonio labor leader Emma Tenayuca, who led the historic pecan shellers’ strike and was a member of the Communist Party. Orozco reminds us that the fiery Tenayuca was a LULACer first.
